Cardin Statement on Major Earthquake Outside Mexico City
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Wednesday after a major earthquake struck outside Mexico City yesterday. As of press time, the death and injury toll continues to rise:
“I am devastated by the growing loss of life and injuries in and around Mexico City. The United States and Mexico share so many historical, political, economic and social ties that make our friendship an enduring one, but our nations also share a common exposure to many natural disasters. This year has been particularly hard on both countries, with hurricanes ravaging the United States and now two earthquakes within a month occurring across Mexico.
“I want my governmental counterparts in Mexico and the Mexican people to know that in this time of great sadness for their country, the United States is here to help them with relief, recovery, and efforts to build back better and stronger. The Mexican people are warm and resilient, and I am reminded of my fond memories in the Mexican capital earlier this year when I travelled there for a number of bilateral and human rights meetings.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Mexico as they cope with the earthquake’s aftermath and mourn their loved ones.”
