Cardin: Trump’s UN Speech Narrow, Dangerous and Would Isolate America

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement after President Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly:

"In his first major address to the United Nations as President of the United States, Mr. Trump missed a real opportunity to demonstrate leadership in rallying our friends and allies to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation and the world.  The narrow and dangerous views he shared are a recipe for American isolation and retreat.  Not America first, but America last, and a more dangerous world.

"Specific to North Korea, we need a sober minded, comprehensive diplomatic surge on the Korean Peninsula that brings the full weight of our alliance, economic, financial, defense, and values-based resources to halt Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions. Inflammatory, irresponsible threats do not keep us safe, rally our partners, or constitute global leadership. Genuine strategy, competently executed and based on our values and ideals, does.  Yet so far, President Trump and his Administration have not demonstrated the ability to create and implement a strategy that will make our country and the world safer.”
