CHISINAU, MOLDOVA – Yesterday, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) traveled to Chisinau, Moldova.
The delegation met with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, President of the Parliament Igor Grosu, Vice President of the Parliament Doina Gherman and Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii. The Senators also were briefed by Moldovan civil society focused on countering disinformation, met with key defense personnel and observed the impact of U.S. foreign assistance in strengthening an important partner on the frontlines of countering Russian malign influence. The delegation applauded Moldova’s resilience in the face of relentless Russian interference efforts and discussed ways to effectively utilize meaningful new foreign assistance for Moldova secured in a recently passed appropriations law. Senators saw firsthand Moldova’s meaningful progress in achieving reforms required to join the European Union and look forward to seeing Moldova formally join the European family – and by extension the Euro Atlantic family.
