Readout of Senators Shaheen and Coons Meeting with Romanian President Nicusor Dan

THE HAGUE – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and co-Chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), Ranking Member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with President Nicu?or Dan of Romania, as well as Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Liviu-Ionu? Mo?teanu and Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia ?oiu.

Senator Shaheen congratulated the Romanian President on his recent election and the appointment of his cabinet. The Senators noted their honor to host the first bilateral meeting for the Defense and Foreign ministers following their appointments.

The Senators thanked Romania for its longstanding partnership with the United States, from its robust support for Ukraine to its strong leadership as a NATO Ally on the Black Sea. The Senators conveyed their support for Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program, given that Romania has met the criteria for the program. The Senators also discussed the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova and agreed upon the need to counter disinformation propaganda to ensure a free and fair election in September.
