THE HAGUE – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and co-Chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), Ranking Member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with President Alexander Stubb of Finland.
During the meeting, the Senators reiterated America’s ironclad commitment to NATO and the transatlantic alliance and welcomed Finland’s contributions to our collective security.
Senator Shaheen and Senator Coons also stressed the importance of President Trump increasing pressure on Russia to bring President Putin to the negotiating table. They agreed on the need to tighten sanctions on Russia, including by passing the Graham-Blumenthal bill which has 82 bipartisan co-sponsors in the Senate.
The Senators also highlighted the importance of NATO in deterring potential aggression by the People’s Republic of China. They noted their desire to see greater and more senior representation from NATO’s Indo-Pacific partners at future Summits, in keeping with recent precedent.
