Ranking Member Shaheen Pushes Back on President Trump’s Attacks on U.S. Allies

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s recent interview in which he denigrated European leaders and cast doubt on the United States’ commitment to its closest allies:

“Our alliances are an enormous source of strength for the United States, yet sadly, President Trump’s misguided hectoring of our closest partners risks irreparable damage that will only limit our ability to protect America’s security interests and raise costs for hard-working families. The President’s harsh attacks, in word and deed, towards our closest allies are nonsensical when compared to his kind words and sweetheart deals for autocrats like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. It is embarrassing that the European Union, among others, were subjected to a half-baked National Security Strategy and further abused by President Trump’s recent ill-thought remarks which benefit no one and serve no American interests.

“Polling shows that the overwhelming majority of the American people reject the President’s worldview and rightly stand by our allies because they understand that partnership makes America more secure and more prosperous. It’s time that President Trump develops a foreign policy agenda that works with our allies—not against them—to advance American national security and address the many economic challenges facing America’s working families.”
