Ranking Member Shaheen, Foreign Relations Democrats Statement on the 30th Budapest Pride Festival

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chris Coons (D-DE), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Time Kaine (D-VA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement ahead of the 30th Budapest Pride Festival:

“As members of the LGBTQI+ community in Budapest prepare to celebrate Pride on June 28, we reaffirm our support for them and their right to peacefully assemble and express themselves. Collective action and demonstrations are cornerstones of resilient democracies, and the right to participate cannot hinge on who you are or whom you love. In this way, those intent on celebrating Pride are safeguarding the fundamental rights of all Hungarians.

“It is disappointing that the U.S. Embassy refused to join a statement marking the 30th anniversary of Budapest Pride offered by many in the diplomatic community on June 23. We offer our best wishes to those celebrating in Budapest and reaffirm that you have allies in the United States who remain committed to a future where all individuals can live freely, with love and pride.”
