Chairman Menendez on World Food Program Agreement to Begin Operating in Venezuela
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement in response to the United Nations World Food Program’s (WFP) announcement that it will begin operating in Venezuela with the priority of serving the most vulnerable children:
“I join the international community in welcoming the World Food Program’s agreement to start operations in Venezuela after years of unconscionable delays and obstruction by the Maduro regime. Venezuela’s manmade humanitarian crisis remains one of the worst in the world, marked by severe food insecurity, a collapsed hospital system, and the exodus of over 5.6 million Venezuelans. While WFP’s program will ensure over a million Venezuelan children have access to at least one meal a day, additional humanitarian aid is still urgently needed. I sincerely hope the Maduro regime comes to terms with the dire reality facing the Venezuelan people and permits a more comprehensive humanitarian response.
“As the WFP programming begins in the months ahead, I look forward to working with Interim President Guaidó and Venezuelan civil society leaders to ensure that assistance reaches those most in need without further delay.”

WASHINGTON – El Senador Bob Menéndez (D-N.J.), el Presidente del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores, emitió las siguientes declaraciones después de que el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones Unidas (WFP, por sus siglas en inglés) anunciara que iniciará operaciones en Venezuela con la prioridad de alimentar a los niños más vulnerables:
“Me uno a la comunidad internacional en dar la bienvenida al acuerdo del Programa Mundial de Alimentos para iniciar operaciones en Venezuela después de años de atrasos y obstrucción por parte del régimen de Maduro. La crisis humanitaria en Venezuela sigue siendo una de las peores del mundo, marcada por la grave inseguridad alimentaria, un sistema hospitalario colapsado y el éxodo masivo de más de 5.6 millones de venezolanos. Aunque el programa del WFP garantizará que más de un millón de niños venezolanos puedan tener acceso a un plato de comida, la necesidad de más ayuda humanitaria es incuestionable. Espero sinceramente que el régimen de Maduro acepte de una vez y por todas la realidad horripilante que está enfrentando el pueblo venezolano para que finalmente se permita una respuesta humanitaria aún más amplia.
“A medida que WFP empiece sus programas en los próximos meses, espero trabajar con el Presidente Interino Guaidó y líderes de la sociedad civil venezolana para asegurar que la asistencia llegue a los más necesitados sin ningún otro contratiempo”.
