Risch: Taiwan Deserves to Participate in UN

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on this week’s 50th anniversary of the passage of UN Resolution 2758, which granted the People’s Republic of China (PRC) membership in the United Nations (UN):

“Over the past five decades, the PRC has used UN Resolution 2758 to unjustly exclude Taiwan from participation in the UN and its affiliate organizations, even blocking Taiwan nationals from entering the UN building. This shameful exclusion of Taiwan from the international stage weakens the very principles upon which the UN was founded.

“Taiwan exemplifies the UN Charter by providing its citizens fundamental human rights and working to maintain international peace and security, while the PRC engages in widespread human rights abuses and uses its economic and military might to destabilize peace and security in the Taiwan Strait, South and East China Seas, and beyond. Beijing should not be allowed to use the UN as its puppet to pursue its own political means, and the United States and its allies and partners must continue to call for Taiwan’s meaningful participation and engagement on the international stage.”
