Risch, Shaheen Statement on Syria Sanctions Relief Executive Order

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the statement below on President Donald Trump’s Executive Order removing certain sanctions from Syria.

“This executive order marks another important step toward implementing President Trump’s decision to lift all sanctions on Syria. There remain some concerns, but President Al-Sharaa’s new government has demonstrated a willingness to cooperate on key U.S. national security interests, including counterterrorism, eliminating chemical weapons, countering Iranian influence, and regional integration. These are welcome developments. However, during this review period and beyond, it is critical that Syria remain on the trajectory toward stability and security for all. Now is the time for Syria to turn the tremendous opportunity in sanctions relief into action and prosperity for its people.”
