Risch, Shaheen Statement on Anniversary of AMIA Bombing

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina:

"Today is the 31st anniversary of the Iran-backed Hezbollah bombing of the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is a fitting time to renew calls for justice for the 85 Argentines killed in this heinous terrorist attack. It is a sobering reminder of the need for all countries in the Western Hemisphere to remain united against the terror threat posed by Iran and its proxies. After recent events in the Middle East, Iran and Hezbollah are weakened but more must be done to prevent them from reconstituting and planning future attacks. Doing so will require international cooperation to deny them resources, such as revenue from money laundering and illicit oil smuggling.

"All governments throughout the world should do more to address the growing scourge of antisemitism that feeds the sort of radicalism and violence that we saw on this day in July 1994. Today we honor the memory of those lost in the AMIA bombing, and as the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, we will continue to denounce antisemitism and call out malign actors who exploit it at the expense of vulnerable communities around the world."
