Risch Recognizes 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Celebrates Promotion of Democracy Across the World
BOISE, Idaho – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today recognized the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of both Germany and Europe, and the end of communism in Europe.
“The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a significant victory for democracy across the world,” said Risch. “The crumbling of the Iron Curtain was the catalyst that made independence possible for many Eastern European countries and led to the end of the USSR. As we celebrate this 30th anniversary, we reaffirm our unwavering alliance and friendship with Germany and congratulate the former communist countries of Europe for their substantial progress over the last three decades to strengthen their democracies, protect human rights, and experience even greater economic prosperity. In the Senate, I have introduced a bipartisan resolution commemorating this significant anniversary which I hope to bring up for a vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee very soon.”
The resolution, S.Res.385, was introduced by Risch on Oct. 24, and is cosponsored by Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
