Menendez Statement on 30th Anniversary of Germany’s Reunification

NEWARK – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign relations Committee, issue the following statement in observance of the 30th anniversary of Germany’s reunification:

“As Germany marks its 30th anniversary of reunification, I extend my gratitude to the German people and its leaders for their friendship.  Three decades after the black, red, and gold flag of a reunited Germany was hoisted above the Brandenburg Gate, Germany is a thriving democracy, a steward of European unity, and an indispensable partner in transatlantic relations.

“The reunification of East and West Germany reshaped the course of modern history, but it was not inevitable.  It required citizens from East and West Germany to believe that peaceful activism could forge a better future.  It required visionary leaders who understood that the risks were worth the rewards.  And it required international cooperation to support this vision.  This diplomatic success laid the foundation for a more secure and a prosperous Europe, for a deepened transatlantic relationship, and for a more stable global order.

“As we mark this historic anniversary, I extend my congratulations to the German people and look forward to our continued work to further strengthen our close bilateral ties.”
