Corker Statement on President Obama’s Announcement on Iraq

MANILA, Philippines – U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement on President Obama’s announcement regarding the U.S. response to the situation in Iraq:

“I regret the situation in Iraq has devolved to where it is and the many decisions and circumstances that have led us to this point,” said Corker. “While I support the administration's short-term actions to respond to the current crisis, I expect them to lay out in the coming days the objectives they hope to achieve and the related time frame. In addition, while I appreciate being informed in advance of this announcement, I also expect the administration to cite the relevant authorities they are relying upon for these actions.”

Senator Corker is currently traveling in Southeast Asia visiting with top government, business and civil society leaders in Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines to discuss trade and security issues that are important to the United States' economic and strategic interests.
