Cardin Meets with Colombian President Santos

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, met with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia in the Capitol yesterday to discuss bilateral relations and the Colombian government signing a revised peace accord with Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group.

“It was an honor to welcome President Santos to the Senate today, where I thanked him for his steadfast leadership that has kept hope alive for peace in Colombia,” Senator Cardin said. “The Colombian people and their government have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to building a lasting peace and bringing an end to armed conflict in the Americas.  Colombia is one of our most important partners in the Western Hemisphere and as the United States undergoes a major political transition it is imperative that we continue strengthening our bilateral relationship to address the opportunities and challenges we face in our hemisphere and on the global stage.”

Senator Cardin also congratulated President Santos on his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize last month.
