U.S. Senator Ben Cardin Statement on Brexit Vote

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, released the following statement Friday after voters in the United Kingdom chose to leave the European Union: 

“I respect the will of British voters but am disappointed by the outcome of the referendum. Euro-Atlantic institutions, which are built on shared democratic values and interests, have maintained peace and security in Europe since the end of World War II, and strong democratic institutions in Europe are needed now more than ever.  

“The United Kingdom is the closest ally of the United States and we will continue to have a strong and special relationship with the U.K. 

“As Europe enters an uncertain period, the U.S. should play an active role to redefine and reaffirm the transatlantic alliance and our multilateral agenda with the UK and Europe. Together, we face significant geopolitical challenges that require unity.  We must maintain our transatlantic consensus on how to deal with a resurgent Russia and the growing threat of ISIS.  I urge leaders in London, Brussels and across Europe to not lose sight of these threats and remain coordinated in our response.”
