Senators Introduce Resolution to Condemn North Korea Nuclear Test

WASHINGTON U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced a Senate resolution today condemning North Korea’s fifth nuclear test on September 9th and calling on that country to uphold its international obligations and abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The resolution also asks China to exercise greater economic and diplomatic leverage over North Korea and reinforces American commitments to our allies the Republic of Korea and Japan while underscoring our continued support of UN Security Council measures against North Korea.

In response to last week’s nuclear test, Senator Cardin said, “North Korea’s continued belligerence is unacceptable. [The] test indicates a new level of development for their nuclear program, and underscores the grave and growing danger that North Korea presents to the regional and international community.”

The Senators represent Democratic leadership of key national security committees: Sen. Cardin is the Ranking Member of the Committee on Foreign Relations; Sen. Reed is the Ranking Member of the Committee on Armed Services; Sen. Feinstein is the Vice Chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence; Sen. Durbin is the Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense and the Assistant Democratic Leader; and Sen. Schumer is the Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
