WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led a bipartisan and bicameral delegation with Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) to Jordan, where they conducted a series of meetings with Jordanian officials, including His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Ranking Member Shaheen and King Abdullah reaffirmed the importance of the close bilateral relationship between the United States and Jordan. Ranking Member Shaheen thanked the King for Jordan’s close cooperation with the United States, particularly its support of U.S. troops during the recent 12-day war. They also discussed the importance of a robust humanitarian response in Gaza and how to achieve a lasting peace in post-Assad Syria.
Ranking Member Shaheen met with HRH Prince Rashid bin El Hassan of Jordan while visiting a U.S.-funded warehouse operated by the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO). The JHCO has served as a critical planning and distribution point for urgent humanitarian relief throughout the region, including in Gaza. Ranking Member Shaheen also met with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and discussed the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, growing insecurity in the West Bank, and Jordan’s efforts to support Syria’s transition.
Ranking Member Shaheen: “Jordan is a major non-NATO ally and the U.S. and Jordan have a longstanding partnership that has been a cornerstone of regional stability. Jordan is instrumental in facilitating aid throughout the region, especially during the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Jordanians are also playing a crucial role in advancing stability in Syria and throughout the wider Middle East. I thank his Majesty King Abdullah II for his leadership and for his reliable and consistent support of the United States.”
