WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on President Trump’s threat to impose additional tariffs on goods coming from Canada, beginning August 1, 2025:
“This President continues to threaten more and more taxes on American businesses and families and continues to undermine America’s relationships with our allies. Last night he threatened that goods coming from Canada, our closest ally and one of our two largest trading partners, would face a 35% tariff starting in three weeks. Since President Trump started down this path nearly six months ago, we’ve seen more than 60 tariff announcements from this Administration, making it nearly impossible for businesses to plan for the future, and this latest step is no different. The result is slower growth, economic uncertainty and higher prices for families.
“Further, this President’s consistent attacks on our neighbor and ally have damaged that vital relationship, and this action even undermined his own Administration’s negotiations to reach a trade deal. I’ve heard from numerous New Hampshire businesses about tourists not coming from Canada or losing sales because of this President. The American people and the overwhelming majority of my colleagues in Congress reject this short-sighted and costly trade war with Canada, which is what I emphasized when I led a bipartisan delegation to Ottawa to meet with Prime Minister Carney earlier this year.”
