Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on Trump Announcement on Ukraine Support

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine:

“This move is a positive, but overdue, step for Ukraine and for our shared goal of a just and durable peace. Today’s decision to send additional Patriot batteries to Ukraine, made possible through the meaningful investments of our European partners, will save countless Ukrainian lives from Putin’s horrific assault. This announcement sends a powerful signal that NATO will not back down in the face of Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine and his attempts to undermine our alliance.

“But this announcement, by itself, will not be enough to bring Putin to the negotiating table and finally end this war. President Trump needs to commit to a sustained flow of security assistance to Ukraine over the long-term. And we must move immediately on the tough sanctions package in the Senate, which has overwhelming bipartisan support and will make it harder and harder for Putin to prop up his economy and sustain his illegal war. After six months in office, I’m glad President Trump seems to be finally coming to his senses about Putin’s responsibility for this senseless and barbaric killing of innocent people. Now is the time to match words with actions and bring this war to an end.”
