Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on Trump Administration Decision to Block International Student Enrollment at Harvard University

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement on the Department of Homeland Security's decision to block international student enrollment at Harvard University:

“The Department of Homeland Security’s decision to revoke Harvard University’s certification to admit foreign students is shortsighted and harmful to America’s global standing. Forcing existing foreign students to transfer or lose their legal status compounds the damage—and we are already seeing countries replicating this behavior toward American students studying abroad. International students contribute to our economy, support U.S. jobs and are among our most powerful tools of diplomacy and soft power. It is unacceptable to use young students as political bargaining chips and this reckless action does lasting damage to our global influence. I strongly urge the Trump Administration to reverse this callous and misguided decision.”
