WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on two major Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil:
“Ten months was far too long to wait, but I am glad that the Trump Administration is finally taking the first step in holding Vladimir Putin to account for his murderous campaign in Ukraine. The designation of two major oil companies is a good start, but it should be the initial step in a suite of actions to impose accountability on Putin and force him to the table for a lasting peace. I’m encouraged to see apparent coordination with the United Kingdom, which took similar steps last week, and the European Union, which is currently finalizing its 19th sanctions package. President Trump must move quickly to fully catch up with our European partners by designating shadow fleet vessels, addressing China’s robust support of Russia’s defense industrial base, using seized Russian assets to generate financial support for Ukraine and supplying Ukraine with the weapons it desperately needs.”
