WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on the conclusion of the presidential election in the Republic of Korea:
“I congratulate Lee Jae-myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea. The conclusion of today’s election demonstrates the resilience South Korea’s institutions in upholding our shared democratic principles and the rule of law. South Korea remains a vital United States defense treaty ally in the Indo-Pacific region, where our two democracies face growing challenges, including an increasingly aggressive Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I remain committed to strengthening our deterrence capabilities on the Peninsula and to working closely with President-elect Lee to deepen U.S.-South Korea economic, security and people-to-people ties and strengthen trilateral cooperation with Japan.”
