WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement after the Senate voted to advance a bipartisan war powers resolution:
“Today’s vote reaffirms Congress’s constitutional role in decisions of war and peace. While there is no love lost for Nicolás Maduro in Congress, Republicans and Democrats are concerned about the lack of a clear strategy on Venezuela and the risks to U.S. national security this could bring. Congress and the American people continue to demand clear answers from the President about the legal basis, costs, objectives and endgame in Venezuela. At a time when Americans are worried about how they're going to pay for health care, housing, energy and groceries, the president is talking about investing tax dollars in Venezuela to support the oil industry. These priorities are totally backwards, and today’s vote showed cleared bipartisan concern with an open-ended and unaccountable mission in Venezuela.”
