Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on President Trump's Russia Sanctions Deadline

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement on President Trump's deadline for imposing additional sanctions on Russia.

“Yet again, President Trump has apparently let President Putin walk across one of his red lines with zero consequences. Setting deadlines and blowing through them deeply undermines America’s credibility, our deterrence to other aggressors and our ability to finally get Russia to the negotiating table. It’s long overdue for President Trump to finally get tough on the Kremlin, including through biting sanctions and more security assistance to Ukraine. That’s the only way we can show resolve to Putin and force him to finally negotiate in good faith. Failing to do so means this war will continue to drag on and more Ukrainians will continue to die. If President Trump fails to impose further sanctions on Russia – as he has refused to do since he took office – Congress stands ready to pass with overwhelming majorities the Graham-Blumenthal bill the moment we return to session. I also look forward to advancing my bipartisan legislation to hold Russia’s enablers to account and continue military assistance to Ukraine.”
