WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement on President Trump’s meeting with Argentina’s President Javier Milei at the White House:
“President Trump seems to think it’s more important to offer $20 billion to bail out Argentina than it is to make a bipartisan deal to prevent health insurance premiums from spiking for over 20 million Americans in a matter of days. That’s not America First—it’s President Trump putting his political allies first even as Americans struggle to make ends meet.
“While I recognize that President Milei and his government have demonstrated resolve in tackling Argentina’s endemic economic challenges, the American people expect and deserve answers about the use of such a staggering amount of their tax dollars, and I will use my position in the Senate to ensure there is accountability. Americans deserve to know why our soybean farmers are losing valuable market share in China to their Argentine competitors, while we’re helping to prop up Argentina’s economy. We need to know if close allies of Secretary Bessent stand to gain from this unprecedented bailout. The Administration must also explain why Argentina has been dubbed ‘systemically important’ to our economy while Brazil—a larger economy—has been targeted with politically motivated tariffs that have raised prices on everyday staples like sugar and coffee for American families.”
