WASHINGTON—On Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. The two discussed the importance of reaching a lasting and durable peace in Ukraine; a capitulation of the country would have catastrophic consequences not just for Ukraine, but also for our broader national security interests. The Foreign Minister and Ranking Member discussed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia, including with additional sanctions, and the need to keep Russian assets immobilized for as long as Russia continues its war of aggression in Ukraine. The two also discussed the Iran bilateral nuclear talks, given the important role that France played in the initial Iran nuclear deal and ensuing E3 formulation. Lastly, they agreed that there is a fragile but important moment for stability in both Lebanon and Syria which must not be missed by the U.S. and our Western partners.
