Menendez, Romney Joint Statement on Tunisia Elections

WASHINGTON – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committeeand Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Chairman of the Subcommittee On Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, And Counterterrorism, issued the following statement regarding Tunisia’s upcoming elections:

“On September 15, for the second time since the 2011 revolution, Tunisians will participate in free and fair presidential elections.  This will be followed by the October 6 parliamentary elections. While Tunisians prepare to reaffirm their commitment to democracy by voting for a new President and representatives, we in the United States reaffirm our commitment to Tunisia and its democracy, security and prosperity.  Tunisia continues to stand as a model for those seeking to transition from autocracy to democracy and the people of the United States will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Tunisia on their inspiring journey.”

Senator Menendez and Senator Romney co-introduced S. Res. 236 on June 5, 2019, reaffirming the strong partnership between Tunisia and the United States and supporting the people of Tunisia in their continued pursuit of democratic reforms.
