Chair Cardin Statement on Inauguration of Taiwan’s President Dr. Lai Ching-te

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following the inauguration of Taiwan’s President Dr. Lai Ching-te:

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Dr. Lai Ching-te as he begins his first term as Taiwan’s president. On this special occasion, let us reaffirm the deep friendship between the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan that is rooted in our shared values. Time and again, Taiwan has demonstrated its steadfast commitment to addressing the most pressing global issues. Taiwan shares our vision for the Indo-Pacific and the world that includes respect for democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. As we mark this important chapter in Taiwan’s rich history, I look forward to working with the Lai Administration to continue strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan relationship through expanding our economic, security, and people-to-people ties.”
