Cardin Statement on Nice Attack

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, released the following statement after an attack in Nice, France Thursday night killed scores of people and injured many others, including Americans. France was celebrating Bastille Day, their independence day:

“I send my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the innocent people who were tragically killed and critically injured celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France. America stands in solidarity with President Hollande and the French people as they continue to combat terror and remain committed to their democratic values.

“The foundational phrase of the French Republic, Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, is exactly the kind of activity people were engaged in last night in Nice and across France as they celebrate their independence day. And the many foreigners who were standing alongside the French, some of whom lost or are fighting for their lives as well, share these sentiments and beliefs too.

“Public servants, security officials, law enforcement, the military, and intelligence experts across the world must continue to work together and share information to achieve the security we need while never giving up the values and ideals we hold most dear.”
