Cardin Condemns Attack on Honduran Environmental Activists, including Berta Caceres’ Daughter

U.S. Senator has repeatedly called for justice in murder of Caceres, end to impunity in Honduras

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Wednesday after Bertha Zuñiga, daughter of slain environmental and human rights activist Berta Cáceres, was brutally attacked along with other activists in Honduras:

“I am appalled at the ongoing targeted attacks against members of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, or COPINH. These attacks are unacceptable and I again call on Honduran authorities to provide protections for vulnerable civil society activists and strengthen efforts to deter criminals who believe they are above the law.

“I am relieved that Ms. Zuniga and her colleagues escaped with their lives. I stand in solidarity with them and pray for their safety.

“I remain concerned about the lack of accountability in Berta Cáceres’ case and will continue to speak out until justice is served.”
