Senadores y Congresistas Anuncian Resolución Bipartidista Reafirmando Apoyo Incondicional del Congreso al Movimiento Pro Democracia en Cuba

WASHINGTON – El Senador Bob Menéndez (D-N.J.), Presidente del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores en el Senado, el Latino y Cubanoamericano de más alto rango en el Congreso, y el?Senador Marco Rubio (R-Fla.),?Miembro de Más Alto Rango en el Subcomité sobre el Hemisferio Occidental,?y los?Congresistas Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.23)?y?Mario Díaz-Balart (R-Fla.25), además del?Senador Dick Durbin (D-Ill.),?el Senador Jim Risch (R-Idaho),?Miembro de Más Alto Rango en el Comité de Relaciones Exteriores en el Senado,?el Senador Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Presidente del Subcomité sobre el Hemisferio Occidental en el Senado,?y el Congresista Albio Sires (D-N.J.-08), Presidente del Subcomité sobre el Hemisferio Occidental en la Cámara, anunciaron una resolución bicameral y bipartidista condenando la respuesta violenta del régimen cubano a los miles de ciudadanos que han salido a las calles para pedir pacíficamente que se respete los derechos humanos más básicos y exigir el fin de la dictadura en la isla. Un total de 24 Senadores y Representantes de la Cámara patrocinaron esta resolución.

Tras días de protestas masivas en ciudades y pueblos en toda Cuba, la resolución es un símbolo de solidaridad en respuesta a los informes de grupos independientes de la sociedad civil cubana que han reportado el arresto, detención o desaparición de cientos de manifestantes pacíficos, mientras que el régimen sigue utilizando la censura del Internet y los allanamientos ilegales de hogares de activistas para intimidar y silenciar el creciente movimiento prodemocrático.

“Lo que estamos viendo en Cuba no tiene precedentes. Nunca ha habido un movimiento pro democracia y de justicia social de esta magnitud en tantas ciudades y pueblos de la isla, lo cual demuestra la determinación del pueblo cubano de liberarse de una vez por todas del puño de hierro del régimen,” declaró el Senador Menéndez. “Mientras el poder de los tiranos en La Habana pierde fuerza, su uso de la violencia y censura del Internet es emblemática de los fines desesperados a los que recurrirán para intimidar y obstruir el creciente coro de voces que piden reformas políticas en Cuba. Hoy, el Congreso de los Estados Unidos está unido en su apoyo inquebrantable e incondicional a los derechos humanos y sociales más fundamentales de los cubanos. Estamos hablando con una sola voz en honor y admiración de la labor que están llevando a cabo los valientes luchadores por la libertad en Cuba, y al mismo tiempo estamos haciendo una promesa solemne de no ignorar el sufrimiento y la subyugación del pueblo cubano a medida que se acercan más a la posibilidad de realizar un futuro de prosperidad y libertad”.

 “El senado de EE.UU. debe enviar un fuerte mensaje bipartidista que estamos unidos contra el régimen comunista en Cuba, el cual está reprimiendo violentamente a quienes protestan pacíficamente y censuran las voces del pueblo cubano,” dijo el Senador Rubio. “La administración Biden debe actuar ya para proporcionar acceso sin restricciones al internet para el pueblo y así comenzar a movilizar a la comunidad internacional. El pueblo de Cuba ya no tiene miedo y el mundo debe responder a ese llamado”.

“Arriesgando todo, miles de cubanos se enfrentan valientemente a su gobierno brutal y autoritario. Necesitan desesperadamente el apoyo del mundo para impulsar sus demandas de libertad. Uno de los mensajes más poderosos que Estados Unidos puede enviar ahora mismo es poner a un lado nuestras diferencias partidistas y estar firmemente, juntos, detrás de este llamado histórico por una verdadera autodeterminación. El pueblo cubano es valiente y fuerte, pero su petición de libertad de expresión, asamblea, acceso al Internet y la oportunidad de elegir a sus propios líderes no puede ser recibida con silencio,”?dijo la Congresista Wasserman Schultz.?“Estoy orgullosa de estar con el pueblo cubano y toda la diáspora cubana en este momento crítico al presentar esta resolución bipartidista, que dice alto y claro: el pueblo estadounidense se solidariza con los manifestantes en La Habana y más allá mientras que se enfrentan a esta dictadura cubana opresiva y tiránica”.

“Agradezco enormemente a mis colegas de la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado, de ambos partidos, que se unieron con una sola voz para expresar nuestra solidaridad con el pueblo cubano y al mismo tiempo condenar la brutalidad del régimen contra los valientes manifestantes luchando por la democracia,”?dijo el Congresista Díaz-Balart.?“El pueblo cubano está arriesgando todo para exigir respeto por sus libertades inherentes. Estamos con ellos y ellos prevalecerán”.

Leading Senators, Representatives Unveil Bipartisan Resolution Reaffirming Congressional Support for Cuba’s Pro-Democracy Movement

Bicameral Resolution calls for holding the Cuban Regime accountable for its violent response to citizens demonstrating for basic freedoms, democracy and respect for human rights

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was joined today by Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-23) and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-25), in addition to Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Albio Sires (D-NJ-08) in unveiling a bicameral, bipartisan resolution condemning the Cuban government’s violent response to the thousands of Cuban citizens who have taken to the streets to peacefully call for respect for basic human rights and the end of the dictatorship in Cuba. They were joined by a total of 24 senators and representatives in unveiling today’s Resolution.

Following days of massive protests in cities and towns across Cuba, the Resolutions come as independent Cuban civil society groups report hundreds of peaceful protesters have been arrested, detained, or are missing, while the regime has continued to rely on widespread internet shutdowns and illegal searches of the homes of activists in an effort to quash the burgeoning pro-democracy movement.

“What we are seeing in Cuba is unprecedented. There has never been a social justice and pro-democracy movement of this size across so many cities and towns in the island, and it speaks to the Cuban people’s determination to liberate themselves from the iron fist of this regime,” said Senator Menendez. “As the tyrants in Havana wither, their reliance on violence and internet blackouts is emblematic of the ends to which they will go to intimidate and obstruct the growing chorus of voices calling for political reforms in Cuba. Today, the United States Congress is united in its unflinching support for Cubans’ fundamental human and social rights. We are speaking with one voice in honor and admiration of the work being carried on by the brave freedom fighters in Cuba, and we are making a solemn promise not to ignore the suffering and subjugation of the Cuban people as they inch closer to realizing a future of prosperity and freedom.”

“The U.S. Senate must send a strong bipartisan message that we stand united against the communist regime in Cuba, which is violently repressing peaceful protests and censoring the voices of the Cuban people,” said Senator Rubio. “The Biden Administration must act now to provide unrestricted access to the internet for the Cuban people, and begin rallying the international community on their behalf. The people of Cuba are no longer afraid and the world must answer the call.”

“Risking everything, thousands of Cubans are bravely confronting their brutal, authoritarian government. They desperately need the world’s support to lift up their demands for freedom. One of the most powerful messages America can send right now is offering to put our partisan differences aside, and stand firmly, together, behind this historic call for true self-determination. The Cuban people are courageous and strong, but their plea for free speech, assembly, internet access, and a chance to choose their own leaders – cannot be met with silence,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “I am proud to stand by them and the entire Cuban diaspora in this critical moment by introducing this bipartisan resolution, which says loudly and clearly: the American people stand in solidarity with the protestors in Havana and beyond, who are standing up to this oppressive and tyrannical Cuban dictatorship.”

Diaz-Balart. “The Cuban people are risking everything to demand respect for their God-given liberties. We stand with them, and they will prevail."

“We are seeing decades of deep Cuban frustration over inept, corrupt, and cruel governance boiling over. While I have long argued for a change in the failed U.S. policy toward Cuba, the Cuban people know the real source of their island's lost potential rests squarely with the ruling dictatorship,” said Senator Durbin. “On this 9th anniversary of Cuban democracy activist Oswaldo Payá’s suspicious death, I stand with the Cuban people in their peaceful demand for a brighter future.”  

“I am inspired by the thousands of Cubans risking their lives to demand the end of communist tyranny and a democratic future in their country,” said Ranking Member Risch. “I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing this resolution, which reaffirms our nation’s historical commitment to support the efforts of the Cuban people to regain their rights and freedoms.”

“I’m proud to introduce this resolution to express solidarity with the Cuban people who are speaking out against decades of oppression,” said Senator Kaine. “With this resolution, we are sending a strong bipartisan message that we stand with the Cuban people exercising their right to demand freedom and reform. They should be able to voice their opinions peacefully. As Chairman of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee, I will continue working to promote human rights and freedom in the region.”

“The Cuban people are tired. They’ve had enough of a failed system that only delivers repression and suffering; they are clamoring for freedom and democracy,” said Rep. Sires. “I’m inspired by the examples of courage we are witnessing throughout Cuba, especially among young people, and I’m proud to stand with my colleagues on a bipartisan basis against this brutal dictatorship and in solidarity with the Cuban people.”
