Risch Statement on Violent Attacks by Security Forces in Khartoum

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the following statement about attacks carried out by elements of Sudan’s security forces:

"I condemn in the strongest terms the use of violence, specifically the firing of live ammunition, against unarmed Sudanese protesters on Monday, as they were peacefully demonstrating to establish a civilian-led authority in their country,” said Sen. Risch. “Once again, I call on Sudan's military council to exercise restraint and I remind its leadership that the world is closely watching their actions. Witnesses and victims have identified Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces as key perpetrators of Monday’s deadly violence—military authorities should investigate and hold accountable those who carried out the attacks. Sudan's protest movement and the military authorities should not let Monday's events impede efforts towards agreeing on a swift transition to civilian authority. The U.S. remains in solidarity with the Sudanese people in their struggle to transition towards a citizen-centered democracy.”
