Kerry, Lugar Haiti Earthquake Resolution Passes Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to last week’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) and Ranking Member Dick Lugar (R-IN) issued the following statement announcing the Senate’s passage of a resolution that recognizes the humanitarian crisis and urges a sustained commitment to the rebuilding of the country:

“The Haitian people have faced this catastrophic earthquake with the same indomitable spirit that has characterized them throughout their history,” said Chairman Kerry. “The United States will help Haitians rebuild their vibrant country. It is encouraging to seethe outpouring of aid to Haiti from the United States and around the world and we offer our full support to all involved in the relief process.  Haiti will need our support today, tomorrow, and in the years to come.”

“The Haiti earthquake has personally touched each one of us as we try to discern the best way to channel the assistance from those who want to help. This will be a long and difficult recovery and Americans will endure in their support. We have already seen remarkable generosity in stories of adoptions, volunteers and unique efforts to communicate with people. The Senate stands ready to provide our support to individuals, institutions and governments who want to assist,” Ranking Member Dick Lugar said.

A summary of the resolution is below:
