Chairman Menendez Statement on Bipartisan Senate Foreign Relations Committee Vote Approving Ukraine Legislation

Committee Passes The Support for the Sovereignty, Integrity, Democracy, and Economic Stability of Ukraine Act of 2014 by a Vote of 14 to 3

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after the committee approved The Support for the Sovereignty, Integrity, Democracy, and Economic Stability of Ukraine Act of 2014 by a bipartisan vote of 14 to 3.

In a strong, bipartisan vote, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee demonstrated their support for the Ukrainian people as they courageously confront Russian military aggression and an attempt to annex the Crimea region of their country.

"The committee today overwhelmingly passed an aid package to assist Ukraine during this critical time that provides loans for economic stabilization, supports planning for upcoming democratic elections, aids in the recovery of stolen assets, and expands security cooperation between the two countries.

"Ukraine is the victim of a reckless expansionist policy being carried out by President Vladimir Putin.  Passage of this bill today in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee reaffirms America's commitment to standing by the Ukrainian people as they strive to determine their own future and destiny without meddling from Russia.  This bill makes it clear that America is resolved to enforce sanctions against anyone responsible for significant corruption in Ukraine or who has committed human rights abuses against peaceful protesters over the last several months.”
