Chairman Menendez Statement on Anniversary of September 11, 2001

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), New Jersey’s Senior Senator and Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, offered the following reflection 13 years after the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11th, 2001:

“Thirteen years ago, we looked across the Hudson and saw our lives change forever. I remember visiting the New Jersey communities that became staging areas for volunteers in the days following 9/11. Americans volunteered; Americans rallied; Americans came together. On September 11th and the days that followed we were united as one nation.

“Today, once again, we first and foremost remember the 2,974 people who died. We remember their families and the courage and service of the first responders.

“The world changed forever 13 years ago and, today, as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, I see what that change meant and what it will mean for this generation and the next.

“Given the events that have unfolded around the world throughout the past 13 years and with the rise of a new terrorist state, we can clearly understand how the events of 9/11 changed the way we live, the way we view the world, and the kind of threats we face. We have seen dictators fall and others rise, and now we see a new and more dangerous threat in the Middle East.

“Yet as we face these challenges, we remain united by our shared belief that we will meet the new threats resolved that there will never be another day like September 11, 2001.”
