Chairman Kerry Responds To Bipartisan Group Of Senators Calling For Hearings On Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) sent the following letter in response to Senator Corker’s (R-TN) letter on the Committee holding hearings on the U.S. mission in Afghanistan prior to the July Fourth congressional recess:

June 25, 2010

The Honorable Bob Corker

US Senate

185 Dirksen Senate Office Building

Washington DC 20510

Dear Senator Corker,

I appreciate your letter regarding the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and your request for hearings on this important topic. I want to assure you that I am well aware of the seriousness of the mission in Afghanistan. In fact, I announced on Thursday evening that the committee will be having another full set of oversight hearings on Afghanistan very shortly.

We will arrange for these hearings to be informative and comprehensive, just as the previous 10 oversight hearings on Afghanistan have been over the past 17 months. As my staff indicated earlier today to the office of all committee members, this new round of hearings will begin as soon as we return from the Fourth of July recess.

We all share a deep concern about this mission and our troops and I’m confident that the committee will continue to conduct oversight was have in the past few months and as I promised we would on Thursday.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Cc: Senators Risch, Isakson, Wicker, DeMint, Webb and Feingold
