WASHINGTON – On Monday, July 6, 2026, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Co-Chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, will lead a bipartisan Congressional delegation to Türkiye for the 2026 NATO Summit and then continue to Hungary for bilateral meetings with the new government.
Senator Shaheen will be joined in Ankara by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Mike Rounds (R-SD) and Representative Mike Turner (R-OH).
At the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, Ranking Member Shaheen will participate in the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum and the delegation will meet with heads of state and foreign counterparts, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
On Wednesday, July 8, the delegation members including Senator Shaheen, Senator Durbin and Congressman Turner will continue on to Budapest, Hungary, for meetings the follow day with the new Hungarian government and civil society leaders.
During engagements at the NATO Summit, Ranking Member Shaheen will highlight significant progress undertaken by NATO partners to increase their defense spending capabilities and underscore that NATO remains central to deterring aggression, preventing costly conflicts and keeping Americans safer and stronger at home. Senator Shaheen will also emphasize the need to return Ukraine to the top of the foreign policy agenda by increasing military support for Kyiv and ramping up pressure on Moscow, including through additional congressional sanctions if the Administration refuses to act. As this marks the final NATO Summit for Senator Shaheen as Co-Chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, she will reaffirm that Congress’ bipartisan commitment to NATO and Ukraine endures beyond any one Administration or political season in Washington.
In Budapest, during meetings with the new government and civil society, Senator Shaheen and delegation members will work to reframe bilateral relations between the U.S. and Hungary around areas of mutual interest. Senator Shaheen will welcome Prime Minister Magyar’s closer alignment with NATO and the EU, which are the cornerstones of European security and prosperity, and encourage further action to support Ukraine.
