Chairman Menendez Statement on Release of Detainees by the Afghan Government

NEWARK, NJ – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued this statement regarding the release of detainees from the Parwan Detention Center in Afghanistan:

“I am deeply disappointed by the decision of President Karzai to release 65 militants from the Parwan Detention Center. There is evidence tying some of these individuals to attacks that killed coalition forces and Afghan soldiers, as well as civilians. In all likelihood, many of these individuals will return to the battlefield, posing a threat to our servicemembers and the people of Afghanistan.  I urge the Afghan authorities to take all possible measures to ensure that these individuals do not return to fight and commit acts of violence.”
